阿力（吳彥祖飾）用了八年時間，從一名小小的毒品批發商混到壟斷海洛英市場的「莊家」（劉德華飾）身旁，負責處理出貨及運輸工作。這麼多年以來，他全心全意要搜集完整販毒的全部資料，可是行事小心的「莊家」從來沒透露過貨倉、製毒工廠的位置；甚至其他同事的面貌，阿力也都未曾見過。後來「莊家」萌生退休之意，想將生意交給阿力接管，於是「莊家」帶阿力到金三角，在軍閥、毒販和罌粟的圍繞下，對阿力做出接棒前的最後試探，一場鬥智的過程，使阿力獲得「莊家」的絕對信任，阿力也漸漸地掌控到經營販毒的秘密。
阿力越發掘「莊家」的真相，越感到迷失，活在兩個極端世界中間。後來他與吸毒者「阿芬」（張靜初飾）投入了一段互相慰藉、各取所需的感情，但是每當他看見阿芬臂上的針孔時，心中便會感到更沉痛的震撼。
後來「莊家」交棒，並且舉家移民，卻在離境時被探員拘捕。「莊家」後來竟用自殺的方式截斷警方的偵查線索。
阿力繼承了「莊家」的位置，一邊當毒販，一邊繼續追蹤販毒線的源頭。然而，他已經分不清自己的真正身份…。
