孤獨內向的紐約IT人Max(吳彥祖)，夢見自己在一陌生城市，邂逅憂傷的女子艾玲(袁泉)。夢中的Max迥然不同，熱情幽默會講流利華語，還大膽吻艾玲示愛，令她驚惶失措跑掉了。幻覺失戀的Max往上海公幹順道散心，因為時差關係，無眠無夢鬆一口氣，卻在隨意拍攝的旅遊照片中，發現艾玲的生活照，驚駭原來真有其人！
Max不顧一切回到上海，在途中遇見和艾玲長得一模一樣的鄉村姑娘依依(袁泉)，Max鼓起勇氣請依依一起往上海尋人，兩人沒有找到艾玲，卻在感情上險些弄假成真。依依埋怨Max讓她知道世上有另一個她，令她貶值了；事實上依依不甘心是個替身，最終不辭而別。Max沮喪返回紐約，艾玲再次入夢，但彷彿在向他呼救，Max已弄不清楚，真愛是存在於夢境還是現實？ 他決定出發尋覓…
