2500年前的印度，正在跟別國爭奪霸權的釋迦國誕生了一個王子，他受到地上所有生物的祝福，更被預言他將會成為世界的王，他的名字叫悉達多，亦即是佛陀。從小見証了人間疾苦的他，捨棄了被賜予的貴族身份，踏上尋求真相的道路。
途中悉達多遇上了很多不思議的事，好像可以預知未來的少年阿說示，被預言三十年後會被兒子殺害的頻婆娑羅王，對自己及別人也很嚴格，為了苦行而自毀眼睛的迪帕。此外還重遇了舊朋友塔塔。一直威脅釋迦國的憍薩羅國，殺害了塔塔的母親及姊姊，塔塔得知悉達多再次回到釋迦國，希望他幫忙打倒憍薩羅國。在塔塔的身邊，出現因身份差異而未能跟悉達多心意相通的女盜賊蜜凱拉，而且兩人一直一起生活。
決心捨棄國家及家庭的悉達多繼續修行之旅，目睹阿說示將自己的身體獻給狼的孩子們當食物，與死亡同行過著苦行生活，希望找到真理的他，在死後七天成為天上的人，之後一直守護悉達多。
另一方面印度的強國憍薩羅國，毘琉璃王子侵略了釋迦國，突然了解自己身世的琉璃王子燃起對釋迦國王子悉達多的憎恨。希望尋求未來而忘卻自己的悉達多，希望捨棄過去的琉璃王子。捨棄國家的男人以及為毀滅敵國而戰的男人，兩個相反的思想交錯的時候，跟他們有關的人，以及整個世界，將會作出巨大的變動。
