這是一齣倡導夫妻、家庭、鄰邦以〞和為貴〞的歷史傳統劇目。皇帝女鳳霞公主冰雪聰明刁蠻任性，活潑可愛不饒人，加之父母愛若掌上明珠，諸事遷就，所以就更為所欲為了。三關主師孟飛雄威武剛直重大義，威嚴不讓也有情。
該劇描寫的正是鳳霞公主與三關主師孟飛雄因遇事分歧在殿上〝互審〞，却因此而產生愛意，當婚禮進行時，公主要求駙馬跪迎，孟飛雄為捍衛大丈夫威嚴而請出先王所賜黃金鐧，將公主〝壓服〞，但矛盾并沒有因此而結束，經過一番新婚波折，公主與駙馬終於領悟到夫妻間應互相尊重，以和為貴，家庭才能美滿幸福。
