神秘的犯罪心理學專家薄靳言（霍建華飾），招募大四學生簡瑤（馬思純飾）作為翻譯和生活助手，他一方面用自己的高智商和專業知識教導簡瑤，將她培養成探案助手，二人攜手偵破青少年連環失蹤等棘手兇殺案件；另一方面，在朝夕相處中薄靳言對簡瑤漸生情愫，而他高智商低情商的巨大反差也給這段情愫增添了不少波折與樂趣。二人感情逐漸升温之際，危險也在悄然降臨。數年前，作為馬里蘭大學犯罪心理專業最年輕教授的薄靳言，在美國時曾追查轟動一時的“鮮花食人魔”案，為了保護人質，自己也成為受害者，被囚禁半年，飽受折磨。
為了脱身，他偽裝出熱愛犯罪的第二人格，獲得罪犯信任。因為“食人魔”謝晗（張魯一飾）在他回國後破獲的第一起案件裏留下訊息，他在第二起案件設置陷阱，差點將之抓獲，也因此惹惱謝晗，利用他身邊人的軟肋，將簡瑤劫持，而這一切竟只為了逼迫出薄靳言所謂的第二人格。為救簡瑤，薄靳言在好友李燻然（王凱飾）傅子遇（尹正飾）等人的幫助下，與謝晗巧妙周旋，不惜身敗名裂，佯裝公開“第二人格”，再次獲得謝晗信任，終於救回簡瑤，也懲治了這個變態殺人魔。
